Shark Pitch 2022 A Huge Success

United Way Glenelg has illustrated that even in challenging times community generosity shines through with over $60,000 raised virtually from this year’s SharkPitch event.

Over 100 people embraced the virtual fundraising event from their lounge room, and another 40 at a viewing party to see three deserving community projects.

With encouragement from MC Neil O’Donnell, the audience was inspired to pledge to their favourite project. AWA Alliance Bank matched pledges up to $15,000.

Now in its fourth year, the event attracts people from as far away as Perth, Brisbane and Melbourne. Several viewing parties were held, one hosted by United Way Glenelg at The Royal Hotel Cool room and another with students from Portland Secondary College, sharing pizza and philanthropy in equal measure.

Jolene Adams from Funky Hearts had the unenviable position of being the first pitcher but set an inspiring standard for others to follow. Funky Hearts raised $14,672.

The youngest pitchers in the history of SharkPitch, 14-year-old duo Ashton Campbell and Airlie Aldridge who were met with a rousing virtual round of applause as they made their way “to the stage” on behalf of Portland Little Athletics Club.

The club hoped that $15,000 could be raised but smashed its goal raising $17,838.

SayNo2FamilyViolence was the final organisation to pitch and two members of the committee Lee-Anne Nelson and John Pye shared pitching duties.

SayNo2FamilyViolence raised $28,720, well and truly exceeding their expectations.

John Pye from SayNo2FamilyVoilence was completely taken aback by the amount raised.

“The generosity of our community just blows me away,” he said. “After going through the very trying times of Covid and challenging economic times that the community is still so generous is amazing.”

Now in its fourth year, the event has raised $210,454 for community projects in the Glenelg Shire.

AWA Alliance Bank has already committed to supporting United Way Glenelg next year to continue to improve the lives of people living in the community.

Gavin Heathcote, CEO of AWA Alliance Bank, said the night exceeded all his expectations.

“Partnering with United Way Glenelg allows us to contribute to an improved and sustainable future for our members and local communities. As a social enterprise bank, now more than ever, you're making a difference with us.”

“It was truly wonderful to see the community spirit at its best!”
