On October 16, 1969, during International Credit Union Week a group of Alcoa employees met to consider the formation of a credit union.
So began the history of the Point Henry Credit Co-operative Ltd., based on-site at Point Henry in Geelong offering financial services to Alcoa employees and their families.
In 1990, the Point Henry Credit Co-operative opened an office on site at Portland Aluminium and began offering its services to Portland Aluminium employees and their families. In February 2002 the Board of Directors approved a change of name to AWA Credit Union Ltd in an attempt to better reflect the spread of members and to recognise the focus being placed on the potential membership base in Western Australia.
In 2004 AWA Credit Union began offering its services to Alcoa employees based in Western Australia and will open an office in Mandurah in December 2004.
From humble beginnings some 35 years ago the Credit Union has now grown to the point where it now has assets under management totaling in excess of $110 million and operations that span the country.
